I am a Senior Medical Informatician at Partners HealthCare System, Inc. I am currently working in the Clinical Informatics R&D department on issues related to Clinical Knowledge Management. We are at present working on developing a Knowledge Management portal for uniform access to clinical content being used across all of Partners’ hospitals and subsidiaries. Other interesting things we are working on are techniques for implementing and deploying controlled medical terminologies (CMT) in a consistent manner and developing a reference architecture for an enterprise wide clinical information system. Prior to Partners, I was a Research Fellow at the National Library of Medicine, where I worked in the Lister Hill National Center on Biomedical Communicationson issues relating to the Semantic Web and Medical Ontologies.

Though the concept of the Semantic Web is currently gaining steam, various researchers (including yours truly) have been working on closely related problems for a long time. In particular, my thesis Information Brokering across Heterogeneous Multimedia Data: A Metadata-based Approach investigates the use of ontologies for capturing, querying and reasoning about information stored in structured and text databases. Interestingly, most of this has relevance today in the context of the Semantic Web. I did my thesis at the Computer Science Department at Rutgers University. I have also worked at Applied Research division of Telcordia Technologies (formerly known as Bellcore), and Micro-electronics and Computer Technological Corporation (MCC) on topics related to information brokering and the Semantic Web. Over the years, I have worked on various prototypes and systems for information brokering, gathering and analysis over distributed networks, such as the internet.

The InfoHarness System was one of the earliest prototypes I worked at Bellcore. This was followed by a family of systems, such as GeoLens and VisualHarness. Commercial versions of these were the Adapt X/Harness and Jitzu products. The OBSERVER System, which I worked on when I was a Visiting Scholar at the Large Scale Distributed Information Systems (LSDIS) Lab at the University of Georgia, demonstrates the use of real world ontologies based on WordNet and Bibliographic Data Ontology to capture and query information stored in various information sources on the internet. The InfoSleuth System, which I worked on when at MCC, is similar to OBSERVER in functionality but is implemented on an agent based infrastructure.

Some other areas which I am working on are Emergent Semantics which is based on the hypothesis, that semantics on the Semantic Web are more likely to "emerge" from various types of information available and interactions between participants as opposed to top down formal specifications. Towards this end I am taking a close look at statistical clustering and NLP techniques. Also of interest are techniques from cultural anthropology, such as consensus analysis and social networks.

Listed below, are various publications and talks, I have worked on. Feel free to take a look, and if something catches your fancy, send me e-mail.
